How to Choose the Right Tax Accountant in Liverpool NSW

Most people in Liverpool do not think about their tax accountant until late July or early October. Then the search starts in a hurry, and a hurried decision usually means picking whoever comes up first on Google without checking much at all.

A tax accountant who does not know your industry, or who is not properly registered, is worse than unhelpful. They can create problems with the ATO that take years to sort out.

Step 1: Make Sure They Are Registered with the TPB

Any person charging a fee to prepare or lodge tax returns in Australia must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB). No registration means they are operating illegally. More importantly, you lose access to the safe harbour provisions under the Taxation Administration Act 1953.

You can search the TPB register for free at tpb.gov.au. It takes about 30 seconds.

New Code of Professional Conduct obligations now require registered tax agents to disclose to you any matter that could significantly influence your decision to engage them. These obligations took effect on 1 January 2025 for larger firms and on 1 July 2025 for practices with 100 or fewer employees.

A registered tax accountant in Liverpool NSW, will be listed on the TPB register and should be able to give you their registration number without hesitation.

Step 2: Check Their Professional Membership

  • CA ANZ (Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand)  currently has around 140,000 members and is one of the most widely recognised designations in Australia

  • CPA Australia, with a global membership of over 170,000 professionals across more than 100 countries

  • IPA (Institute of Public Accountants), which represents tens of thousands of members and students and is particularly strong in small business accounting

Membership in these bodies is voluntary, but it means ongoing education requirements, professional conduct standards monitored by the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board (APESB), and a formal complaints and disciplinary process. If something goes wrong, you have an avenue.

Step 3: Find Someone Who Understands Liverpool's Business Mix

Liverpool is one of the most culturally diverse parts of Greater Sydney. More than 43% of residents were born overseas, and close to 52% of the population speak a language other than English at home. Communities from Vietnam, India, Iraq, and the Middle East make up a significant portion of the local business community.

The Liverpool City Council actively supports in-language business advisory through the NSW Business Multicultural Program, with services delivered in Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, and Vietnamese, reflecting how many businesses here are run by people navigating two languages and two sets of cultural norms at once.

If English is not your first language, or your family's business operates in a way that mixes personal and commercial finances in culturally common ways, you need an accountant who has seen that before. Someone who serves only Anglo-Australian salary earners from a suburban office may not be the right fit.

Many local businesses are in manufacturing, construction, health care, retail trade, and transport  industries that each come with specific deduction rules and ATO compliance focus areas. Make sure the accountant you pick has actual experience in your sector.

Step 4: Understand What You Are Actually Paying For

Fees in Liverpool tend to be more competitive than in inner-city Sydney, but that range is still wide.

Here is a general benchmark based on current market rates:

Service

Typical Fee Range

Simple individual tax return

$99 to $220

Complex individual return (investments, multiple income streams)

$250 and up

Sole trader tax return

$300 to $600

Small business (company/trust) annual compliance

$2,000 to $8,000+

Monthly bookkeeping retainer

$300 to $1,200 per month

These are not fixed; they depend on the complexity of your situation and the accountant's experience.

The bigger risk is not paying too much. It is paying too little and ending up with an accountant who misses legitimate deductions.

One example that circulated in 2024 involved a Sydney café that saved roughly $2,500 a year by using a cheaper accountant, only to find, when they switched, that they had missed approximately $15,000 in annual deductions and overpaid $8,200 in GST over the same period. The maths was not hard to work out.

Ask any accountant you are considering for a clear fee breakdown before engaging them.

Step 5: Ask About Software and How They Communicate

This one matters more than people expect. If you are running a business in Liverpool and using Xero or MYOB for your books, you want an accountant who works fluently in those platforms, not one who asks you to print and scan everything.

The way an accountant communicates is also worth checking. Do they explain things clearly, or do they speak in jargon and leave you nodding along without understanding? Will they call you back within a reasonable time, or do you have to chase them for weeks?

A quick way to test this is the initial consultation. Most registered accountants in Liverpool will offer a free or low-cost first meeting. Come with a question that is specific to your situation, something about your industry or your business structure and see whether the response is clear and confident, or vague and generic.

Step 6: Watch for These Red Flags

Not every accountant you encounter will be the right choice. A few things worth being cautious about.

  • They guarantee you a large refund before even looking at your records

  • They suggest claiming deductions that feel unusual or poorly explained

  • They are not willing to show you their TPB registration number

  • They ask you to sign a blank or incomplete return

  • They are difficult to contact after you have paid

The ATO monitors tax agents, and if your accountant is cutting corners, you are the one who ends up with an audit notice. The agent's registration might get suspended, but the tax liability lands with you.

Tax agents are now required to notify you about any TPB investigations or significant conduct matters that could affect your confidence in engaging them.

Step 7: Think Beyond the Annual Return

The best accountant for your situation is not necessarily one who just lodges your return once a year. For many Liverpool residents and business owners, the real value comes from advice across the whole year.

That might mean knowing whether it makes sense to register for GST if your turnover is approaching the $75,000 threshold.

Or understanding the PAYG instalment system, the ATO automatically enrols sole traders into quarterly tax prepayments once their instalment income reaches $4,000 or more and they owe at least $1,000 in tax on their last assessment. Many business owners are caught off guard by this the first time.

For families in Liverpool investing in property, there are specific rules around what you can claim on investment properties and how rental income interacts with your overall return. These are not things most people work out on their own without making mistakes.

Ask the accountant you are considering how involved they want to be throughout the year.
